The advent of composite fibers had further technology several paces ahead and killed several of man's heritages. Is it reason to become nostalgic? Of course not, but there are always those fleeting instances when you yearn for the classic, for the traditional without becoming odious to the innovation. Composite fiber on yachts against wood on classic yachts? Yeah sure, but I do long for those traditional wooden sloops which were the true classic yachts.
Sifting through a number of odds and ends landed me to Baum & König Hamburg, a classic yachts broker operating on this address:

It seems that the guys over at Baum & König Hamburg knew what classic yachts are all about. You should check out their extensive directory for classic yachts (at www.classic-yachts.de/Brokerage). There are designs that are truly marvelous, such as the Holmens Yachtverft 1958. A true Norwegian origin you can almost imagine it reliving some pieces of the Viking past. I happen to be historical romantic and I always leap in joy seeing marvelous pieces like this. It is a 1958 sloop with a varnished mahogany hull, a rare color that is mostly lost in the art of shipbuilding. It retains all of its interior and layout; this is a beautiful 12 meters classic cruiser.
Those wishing for manageable classics can check out the 61ft Erik Salander Skerrycruiser. Built of Swedish pine, this fast sloop can be handled by 2 but accommodates 6. It has oak ribs on galvanized steel frames and lead for ballast, making room in its berth for 6 people.

This schooner is such marvelous beauty. Even those sails are in perfect shape. Built in 1900, she was a workhorse carrying loads from the quarries to the Castilian defenses. Despite the heavy task, the oak planks have been preserved well, making her appearance of today in the 2007 a marvelous find. It's a surprise to find a rig schooner in this excellent condition, a bigger surprise still to find it on sale.
